ThoughtsThis wallpaper deals with Sam's desperate mindset after Dean's death and shows the visual juxtaposition of day & night, dark & light, birth & death, black & white. On the left we see Dean, post-resurrection, alone and confused, on the right Sam is at the crossroad, grim and determined to bring his brother back. The grief over Dean's death set the darkness within Sam free and he is willing to sacrifice everything to be reunited with his brother.

The text emphasises that notion by suggesting that Sam left behind light, goodness, optimism - in short, everything that is associated with 'light of day' - in the time he was without Dean. The angle and lighting in the cap of Sam at the crossroad results in Sam throwing a really huge, elongated shadow and by allowing that shadow to cross over into Dean's side of the wallpaper, I used that to show that Sam's inner darkness 'overshadows' the joyful fact of Dean's return. I also like the symbolism of Sam and Dean's shadows falling side by side, while the characters themselves face away from each other.

ThoughtsThe idea for this wallpaper stems from Sam’s statement to Jesse in 'I Believe Our Children Are The Future' that his wrong choices will haunt him forever, and since this is Supernatural, I took the liberty to interpret the word 'haunt' quite literal. In Lucifer Rising Sam chooses to sacrifice the possessed nurse Cindy McKellan, in order to boost his powers with her blood and defeat Lilith. Granted, Sam is convinced that in doing so he will stop the apocalypse, but he agonises over the decision and in the end he needs to realise that it was all in vain, he sullied his hands with the blood of an innocent and brought on the apocalypse himself. Violent deaths create angry ghosts in Supernatural, so Cindy’s ghost is quite literally haunting Sam in my wallpaper.

I imagine that Sam had to dispose of the body and he would have the decency to at least bury Cindy. So, in the scene I created, Sam just hastily buried Cindy in some field and put together a simple wooden cross for her, when her ghost appears and knocks him to the ground. She is angry, obviously, but I see Cindy as a death omen here, a ghost who wants justice, rather than revenge. She points towards the graveyard behind her, demanding a proper burial. A proper burial stands symbolic for the fact that she wants her death acknowledged, achieve peace for herself and her family and, most importantly, for Sam to openly face what he has done to her. As long as he doesn’t own up to his guilt, both, Cindy and Sam, will not be able to find peace. To emphasise that notion, I used Sam’s quote in the wallpaper.

ThoughtsThis is the companion piece to 'The First Seal' and deals with Sam breaking the last seal on the door to Lucifer's prison by killing the first demon, Lilith. Sam looms over Lilith, holding her in his psychic death grip, grim and determined. I took the 'door' metaphor from the show pretty literal and positioned Lilith in front of it to show her function as the last barricade, as she falls dead, the door opens. White light escapes the opened door, heralding the arrival of the fallen angel and Ruby, who orchestrated the escape of the 'lightbringer', awaits him triumphantly. Lucifer's prison is located underneath a convent, so I used a couple of church stocks to emphasise that. Since my manip base for Ruby at the door had a pretty distorted perspective, I went on with it and used some weird angles and perspectives on the other images as well, trying to achieve an Escher-esk feeling, I am not quite sure if that worked though.

ThoughtsIn my mind this is the moment where Dean breaks from the torture Alistair subjected him to and he gets off the rack. He is defeated at Alistair’s feet, who triumphantly towers over his new 'pet'. To the left we see the angels, trying to battle their way into hell, but they are too late, they won’t reach Dean in time. I incorporated both Castiel’s as well as Alistair’s quotes from 'On The Head of A Pin' into the wallpaper, because I wanted both perspectives in the piece. Visually I tried to build a little cave within hell, where Alistair kept Dean separated and tortured him. I used a volcano, smoke, rocks and fire sparks to recreate hell and a couple of flying/ exploding bricks where the angels try to break through. The red/orange colour scheme obviously corresponds with fire/ hell, and the piece goes from light (where there’s hope in form of the angels) to very dark (where Dean cowers in darkness).

ThoughtsIn S4 both Sam and Dean are forced to confront their own darkness. While Dean tries to come to terms with the fact that hell turned him into a torturer, Sam marches down a path that endangers his soul, in an attempt to use his powers for good. In the wallpaper I wanted to encapsulate the part of Sam's as well as Dean's arc that was connected to blood, blood consumed and blood shed.

Dean's hands are soaked in the blood of the victims he tortured in hell. He is kneeling at a river, trying to get rid of the blood on his hands, to wash himself free of his guilt, but the river carries blood instead of cleansing water and so the stains remain. Obviously this symbolises Dean's inability to find forgiveness for his 'sin'. Sam is drinking demon blood to enhance his powers, he is standing on a road that leads straight to the gates of darkness/hell. He can't ever wash himself clean from his demonic blood either, so he tries to use it for good and as a consequence damns himself.

ThoughtsThis wallpaper revolves around the number 3! In biblical numerology the 3 represents unity and so I opted for creating a triptych (greek: threefold), which is a work of art that is divided into three sections, but together these sections build a thematic unit. The design is based on the idea that men are made of three parts (soul, body and spirit), a derivation from the idea of the holy trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each of these parts corresponds to one of the three elements of fire (soul), earth (body) and air (spirit).

In the left panel we see the corresponding pair of soul-fire, with Dean's soul being tormented in the eternal fires of hell. In the middle we have the pair of body-earth, with Dean clawing his way out of his grave. The handprint that connects the left and the middle panel represents Castiel's divine intervention, matching with the handprint on Dean's shoulder. Lastly, in the right panel I have the pair of spirit-air, and I associated that with Castiel. I added the wings of a dove in this panel, which is not only a common symbol for the Holy Spirit, but also serves as a symbol for the wings of the angel.

For the colouring I chose red (fire), brown (earth) and blue (air) and kept yellow as the continuous colour in all three panels. As for the number three itself: The three panels represent the three columns that make the number three in the roman notation (III). I also added the newspaper that shows the date of Dean's resurrection, 18th of September, which is a play on the number three as well: (3+3)x3 (18) and 3x3 (9).

ThoughtsThis wallpaper is about Dean's life, depicted as a chain of interdependent moments in time, each moment informing the next one and in their entirety they make up who and what Dean is. The formative events in his life are heteronomous, they are not within his own control, but a logical chain of events activated by the Yellow Eyed Demon and furthermore influenced by John and Sam. Whatever dreams and goals in life Dean may have harboured for himself, they were subordinated to his family’s war against the supernatural.

In my wallpaper I tried to visualise this: The YED initialises the chain of events in Dean’s life and like a falling row of dominoes they race towards the end. The dominoes fall counter-clockwise in relation to the reading flow of the caps that I chose to summarize Dean’s life. The yellow that pervades the whole piece matches the yellow in the YED eyes, symbolizing his influence on Dean’s life throughout time. There's also important symmetry in the composition: It begins with wee!Dean running out of the house, carrying his brother to safety and it ends with adult!Dean running towards his fallen brother, also wee!Dean mirrors John's hunting stance, he is sandwiched between his father's hunting life and the responsibilities for his brother.

ThoughtsThis wallpaper is about Sam's willingness to open the gates of hell if necessary to pull his brother from eternal damnation. It can be seen as a positive counterpart to my 'Whatever It Takes' piece, where Sam surrenders to darkness in order to save his brother. In 'To Hell and Back' Sam's love for Dean overcomes the boundaries of dimensions, without Sam loosing himself. He's basked in white light as he reaches through the flames and holds on to his brother, who storms forward, determined to pay his debt for getting Sam's life back. It's a neverending story of love and salvation between the brothers.

ThoughtsThis wallpaper is about Ruby as a tempting Eve for Sam, trying to seduce him step by step over to the dark side, whispering lies to him (snake) and using Dean's deal as bait (the poisoned apple). I am immensely proud of the Ruby manipulation here, 'cause it's one of the most complex one I've ever tried! I wanted the contrast between her innocent appearance (the white dress, the light surrounding her) and the regalia of wickedness and evil (apple and snake). Sam looks skeptical but already finds himself caught in her world, without realising it.

ThoughtsThis is one of the S3 themes that intrigues me a lot. Sam's determination to save Dean, come hell or high water and how far he may be willing to go, to achieve that goal. Is he willing to kill, to play with dark magic or considering to take demon deals? I always wanted to work with exclusion/difference for once and this was the perfect opportunity, displaying negative!Sam on the left, an inversion to the caring and gentle character that we know. Dean is willing to go, but Sam won't let him, possibly at the expense of his own soul.

ThoughtsThis is a S3 promotional art, that I based on my Salt'n Burn layout (Oct07). I placed Dean in the light here because he lost the burdens that weighed him down in S2, I think his smile at the end of the finale demonstrates beautifully how relieved and happy Dean is. Sam on the other hand is smack in the middle of the storm, because he got a lot of burdens handed over for S3, saving Dean's life, his own death and its consequences, his role in the demon war, as the last of the psychic children standing.

ThoughtsThere's a lot of crossroads in the show but this piece isn't about deals being made but about the crossroad as a symbol for a parting way to give your life a new direction. Right after John's death Sam tries to cope with his grief and feelings of guilt by honoring John's legacy, dedicating himself to the hunt. He denies himself his dreams of a normal life, in order to follow the path that his father chose for him.

So I depicted the life Sam leaves behind on the one side and the path he is following at the moment on the other, John's shadow looming over him, influencing his decision. Ultimately though, Sam needs to find his own way and I hope we'll get to see that one day.

ThoughtsAfter John's death Dean is kind of forced into the leadership role, burdened by John's sacrifice and with the secret about Sam and he nearly buckles under the pressure during the first half of S2. But through the loss of his mentor he also learns to grow into a man of his own, basing his decisions on his own judgments, questioning and criticising his father's decisions in the process and I wanted to visualise that process in this wall.

By smashing John's reflection (questioning his father) Dean is able to find his own personality, he looks through the broken mirror only to see himself more clearly and defined. I want to emphasize that Dean doesn't destroy John himself, his father is and always will be a hero in Dean's eyes, he only smashes what John reflects back on him, the burdens and expectations he placed upon his son.

ThoughtsI was always very ambivalent towards John, he made me furious because of the responsibility he put on Dean's shoulders at an age so young and his tendency to be reprimanding and harsh. I never had a doubt that he loved his sons though. What made this scene so incredibly intense for me was that John made sure that his last words to his firstborn weren't only about his love for Dean as a son (which was in there as well though) but about Dean as a person.

An acknowledgement of his immense importance for this family, about the sacrifices Dean made and his steady and loyal input for Sam and John. It's an appreciation Dean needs to hear and it saddens me (and makes me mad as well, as usual with John ) that John knows that Dean needs this acknowledgement from him, more than a simple 'I love you, son', but wasn't able to give it to him when he was younger.

ThoughtsRe-Work July07: I wasn't very happy with the old version of 'Indestructible'. The colouring was cold and monotonous, the cap of Dean, though with the appropriate wistful expression, too bleak and the 'Hole' stock I used too dominant. So I made the colouring overall warmer, since Dean is remembering his father fondly, took an actual cap from the scene in 'Bloodlust' that the quote refers to and found a different stock to use. I simplified the split of the canvas, that separates memory from present and toned down the overall texturing.

ThoughtsHere I chose the Ozzy Osbourne song to show how Dean is stuck in the past and can't move onwards. The lyrics really manage to capture that Dean is lost. His mother died, Sam left and Dad disappeared, leaving Dean alone and all he can focus upon is his idea of a family. I wanted to emphasize this focus by using the light beam from Dean's eyes over the words 'Road To Nowhere' to his childhood image.

He sits in the 'basement of his past' and instead of getting up the stairs and out into a possible future, he stares at the window, back at something long lost. Overall I tried to achieve the look of an worn-out photography to capture the 'past' metaphor

ThoughtsI wanted to picture the moment Sam decides to go to college, which causes John to cut all ties with his son. The road in this instance symbolizes the distance this fight causes between these characters, the storm clouds a metaphor for their anger towards each other. Dean is caught in the middle of the people he loves the most and while John and Sam don't look back, determined to go their way, Dean although he is following John, looks back to his brother, sorrowful.
